What you will see
- Shopify: open (you can still add evidence), submitted, won, or lost. Some network programs skip the open window entirely.
- Stripe: under review after you counter, then won or lost. In rare cases Stripe reports a late win if an issuer reverses a prior loss outside the normal cycle.
- Square: dashboard and email notices; public articles describe bank review on the order of up to about 90 days.
What happens to the money
On a win, the disputed amount typically returns. Whether the dispute fee returns depends on the processor and country. Shopify says the chargeback fee is returned if you win. Stripe says the dispute-received fee is generally not returned outside Mexico, while a countered fee may be returned if you win. Check the pricing page that applies to your account.
How final is final
Shopify says there is no appeal and Shopify cannot overturn the bank. Stripe says the issuer outcome is final for the parties and Stripe does not support arbitration on its platform. A customer can still withdraw a dispute in some cases even after a loss. That is their bank conversation, not a merchant appeal form.
Winning does not remove the dispute from your chargeback rate. Prevention still matters more than any single packet.
