Respond again if needed A formal chargeback is a new response path with its own reason, fields, and deadline.
What Stripe means by inquiry
The word can be confusing because Stripe displays inquiries in the same general disputed-payments area as formal disputes. The important distinction is stage: an inquiry is a request to clarify or resolve a concern before the formal chargeback process. Stripe recommends responding at this stage, and says an inquiry that escalates requires another response.
| Stage | What changes | Your job |
|---|---|---|
| Inquiry | The account owner's question is still in a pre-dispute stage. | Read the claim and send the direct record or resolution the case requests. |
| Formal dispute | The issuer has formally disputed the payment and the response form controls. | Choose accept or counter, map evidence to the reason, and submit before the displayed deadline. |
| After response | Stripe forwards the response and the case moves through review. | Keep the submission record and monitor the Dashboard for the outcome or bank response. |
Assemble the answer around the confusion
- 01Confirm the transaction
Check the payment, amount, date, customer or account context, and the statement descriptor. An unfamiliar descriptor may be the whole problem.
- 02Read the claim details
Stripe says the Dispute details page may include documents from the bank. Read those before choosing a generic explanation.
- 03Lead with one resolving record
Use the refund confirmation, delivery event, order detail, cancellation log, or account activity that addresses the actual question.
- 04Keep the response bounded
Add only context that makes the direct record understandable. Save the exact response and check the case status afterward.
If the inquiry becomes a formal chargeback
Start over from the new formal notice: read the reason, amount, evidence fields, and due date. Stripe says the earlier inquiry response does not replace the formal response. The chargeback response guide explains the packet workflow, while the representment guide explains the network term for the evidence-backed response.
